Humans and Horses: Sue and Ralph McGarry and Southern Fancy C

Sue and Ralph McGarry and Southern Fancy C, Reg #90-35219

Our first fox trotter was Charlie, a no papers Bay Mare Fox Trotter. Plattsburg advertised a barn ride in the Genglebach’s Barn. This was the beginning of my introduction to a whole new world. I met Tony and Paula Crump at that barn ride. I brought Charlie to ride and Tony Crump was not impressed with her gait, just asked me if I was happy and said, then ride. Some time in those weeks we bought a mare named Contender’s Sassy Angel, from Bill & Carol Loftin, also as a trail horse.

I then got a Bee in my Bonnet that I wanted to Show. We met up with Tony and Paula Crump. They said that while the horse we had could fox trot she did not like to show and would not make a good show horse. We had been told she did not like to show so this was not news. Tony and Paula worked hard with us and Sassy was her true self. Going in Ovals bored her and she could hard trot, fox trot, pace, and any other gait she wanted that would get her out of this arena gig. She did teach me how to show and how to ride a fox trotter. She loved to go out on the trail and won her first endurance ride for the people who bought her.

We were horse hunting again, and after some trial and error, Tony got a phone call that a nice mare was for sale down in Arkansas. Tony called and we loaded up with a trailer that Saturday. On the way down, Tony, Paula, Ralph and I realized we did not know the size of this mare. I am near 5’11” so that is kind of important. We got to John Ed Whitaker’s barn and he pulled out a beautiful sorrel mare named Southern Fancy C. John Ed got on her, lit his pipe and started riding. SOLD! With the help of Tony and Paula, Ralph & I had several outstanding show seasons on that mare. We both showed other horses and Fancy eventually retired. We loved her until the day she died. We are always looking forward to the future and our next adventure with our fox trotters.
