Judge Certification, Young Judge Academy Launch Scheduled

Last month, the MFTHBA hosted a survey to facilitate feedback from members, exhibitors, judges and trainers within the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse breed.  The input was the first step in the process of improving the current judge certification training and selection process.  “When I began writing down the survey questions, I had hoped that we would receive a few useful responses,” shared Anna Johnson. “I was utterly blown away not only by the mass of responses but by the honesty and detail given by each participant.”  A graduate assistant at William Woods University, Ms. Johnson was hired to provide an outside perspective on improving the certification process and expanding the certified judge pool.

Working with MFTHBA President Mark Mackie and the MFTHBA Judges Committee, Ms. Johnson has spent the last several weeks reviewing the survey results.  “Every single response was read and re-read and detailed notes were taken,” added Johnson. “We heard the members’ concerns regarding consistency from the judges, eagerness for new educational materials, and the need for improved testing and selection processes for MFTHBA carded judges, among many other concerns and suggestions.”

The team is working diligently to make improvements to the current judge certification training and selection processes. The first Judges Certification Clinic of 2020 will be held on February 15th at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.  This event will also serve as the launch for a new MFTHBA Young Judge Academy.  This Academy is an innovative program created to provide inexperienced, outside, or young judges with the necessary training to judge MFTHBA sanctioned horse shows.

The cost to attend the Judges Certification Clinic is only $25.  Individuals may choose to attend as a participant or an auditor.  Registration is required by February 1.
