Gunsmoke’s Charming Lady A.

by William, Judy and Brent Abbott

The 1992 Reserve World Grand Champion 4 Year Old, Gunsmokes’ Charming Lady A., is a granddaughter of Zane’s Charming Lad and Merry Boy Sensation. She is sired by the 1987 World Grand Champion Sensations Gunsmoke. Her dam is Lads Charming Dutchess.

No story about Lady would be complete without a story about her dam, Lads Charming Dutchess. Dutchess was raised in Missouri and sold into Texas in the mid 8O’s. A gentleman purchased Dutchess, and two other Charming Lad mares and one filly out of Dutchess and Giles Hot Toddy. The gentleman died, leaving his widow to care for the mares. She was afraid of horses and called the local horse trader to come get them. They were destined for the soap factory when our good friends, Ray and Rita Woods of Beckville, Tex., intercepted and purchased them just prior to the slaughter house.

We purchased two of the mares including Dutchess and the Dutchess X Hot Toddy filly. Brent showed Dutchess for several years. He won a lot of classes as a 12 and 13 year old against grown-ups and professions. Dutchess is a large solid grey mare with good confirmation and tail set. Also probably the best front end and natural fox trot as any Fox Trotter.

Dutchess is the dam of the 1991 Amateur World Grand Champion, Toddy’s Lady Anne .and full sister to Texas Champion Toddy’s Roan Princess.

Lady was foaled in Tenaha, Tex., the little east Texas town that Tex Ritter grew up near to and made famous in his songs. She was a very feisty filly, very loose and with good conformation.

We didn’t get Lady ready for the 2 year old show season. We carried her to Middleton Stables in the spring of 1991 for the 3 Year Old Futurity. Jerry and Geno watched lady make a few rounds and advised us to take Dutchess back to Gunsmoke to try to get another lady.

Brian Oglesby trained Lady. Her first outing was a 4th place finish at the 3 Y Old Futurity. Brent and Brian won the youth and 3 Year old Championship at the 1991 Southern Classic and Reserve Champion 3 Year Old at Mid America and Reserve Champion youth (15-17) at the 1991Celebration.

Lady had a good show season in 1992, taking reserve at the 2 Year Old Futurity and Mid America. It was a thrill for us when Brian and Lady took the Reserve World Champion 4 Year Old at the Celebration.

A big powerful mare with an excellent front end, classy high tail set and big lick Fox Trot makes Lady a favorite with a lot Fox Trotter fans that appreciate the old fashion fox trot. One can certainly see the big grey mare when she enters the show ring.

Lady is now at Brian Oglesby Barn, training for the 1993 show season. She is steadily improving, hopefully by September she will earn your support as the world grand champion.
