Traveler’s Lady Nell M.

by Martha Kimball

We bought Traveler’s Lady Nell M from the Middletons in Match of 1990 and Geno showed her during her two year old year. Started off with a thrilling win for us at the Two Year Old Futurity and continued her winning ways through the summer. At the Celebration she was Two Year Old World Champion under the capable hands of Geno Middleton.

For Nell’s year old year we decided ‘l should ride my mare and you didn’t have to ask me twice! Nell is a super to ride and it was a challenge for me to see if I could even get close to the way Geno rides her with such ease. I didn’t get to ride Nell as much as I wanted to because our business wouldn’t allow me the time to make the trip to Missouri as much as I needed to but every time I did get to ride her I got a little more use to her. Geno was a great help and made me try to get better and better and Jerry even had to get in there and give me a pep talk or two to make me do it right! I learned a lot and never have enjoyed riding a horse more than when I could get Nell doing her thing. ·

It was fun to show at the Celebration and I won the chance to show on Saturday night with my win of the Three Year Old Amateur Mare class on Tuesday night. The class was big as·all the amateur classes seemed to be which I think is great and winning it was the biggest thrill since I started showing Fox Trotters in the early 1980’s. I worked hard with Nell the next three nights and was ready for the class on Saturday night. Lee Hackler and I had a lot of friendly rivalry going on all year with our three year olds which culminated at the Three Year Old Amateur World Championship. I want to congratulate Lee on his win this year but he better look out for Nell and I next year! We’re after that blue ribbon!

Next year I hope to have the time to ride Nell even more and now we’ll have the canter added in which I’ll have to learn too but with a new computer I have just set up at our business I hope I can head to Missouri even more. I’ll just leave the computer writing checks and doing payroll and I’ll be riding my favorite mare ever!
