In 1994, a good friend of ours went to a horse sale in southern Michigan. He immediately recognized a grey stallion, Zane’s Grey Sam, in one of the pens. Jerry recognized Sam from the Show and Celebration in Ava several years earlier. Sam was about 20 years old, and very thin. We brought Sam to our farm 200 miles north, in Wolverine. Sam was missing several teeth, but after veterinary care, and some dental work, he started to blossom. He spent his last 2 years on our farm, and we raised several foals from him. Unfortunately, grey horse melanoma took his life, but in the short time he was with us he showed me how a stallion can and should behave no matter what is asked of him.

George Casper (Cabool, MO) had this to say about Zane’s Grey Sam:

“Willard Gamel had a dispersal sale in Halfway, MO in the fall of 1984. I bought Sam. In May I started showing him in South Central shows. I modeled him at the Celebration in 1985. My wife Judy and daughter Rhonda both rode him. After raising 4 crops of foals by him we sold him to a lady in Lansing, Michigan. Sam was about 16 then. Sam sired the Reserve World Champion in 1983, Sam’s Sweet Sue, owned and ridden by Paul Collins. He also sired a 3 year old futurity winner. He was a grand old horse, I’ve got 3 of his granddaughters left.”
