Paula Deen is out of Silverado’s Golden Fox L., a beautiful palomino mare we purchased from the late Ernie Long, and is sired by Jester’s Charming Legend, owned by Brian Oglesby. When Paula was born, we knew she was something special. We decided on the name Paula Deen because she was yellow like a stick of butter! I modeled her as a baby colt, winning the 2012 Amateur WGC Weanling Class and the 2013 WGC Amateur Yearling Class the following show season.

Our trainer, Vance Vahle, broke Paula as a two year old. However, due to her good sense and gentle nature, there was really no “break” to her. Vance was able to get on and start riding. Paula Deen returned to Barham Stables this past March to prepare for the 2015 Three Year Old Futurity. She was an eager, willing student and Vance has said she was the easiest horse he has ever trained.

When Paula Deen and Vance entered the arena on preliminary night, they took my breath away! She shook from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail, scoring first on all the judge’s cards. On championship night, Paula Deen gave it her all and was crowned the 2015 Open Three Year Old Futurity Champion. It was a dream come true… Paula Deen proved she was more than just a pretty face!

We have appreciated the many kind comments, words of encouragement, and support we have received from family, friends, and even complete strangers. We are looking forward to the future and Paula Deen’s show career. Eventually, we hope for her to introduce our grandchildren to the show ring. Our grandkids have said it best, “We LOVE Paula Deen!”
